Albums, Concerts and a Speech.

Lots of things going on… still working away on some galactic music for a project… in the meantime here is a quick update on things that have been going on.

Penny Black (an independent feature film) had it’s official premiere at the Arohanui Film Festival on Friday evening to a sold-out house! (Also Lapwing and Breakery featured in the festival!) To coincide with that, the score album is now available. You can get it from these places:

My piece “Fourteen Moments for Three” was selected as one of the winners in the NZTrio Composers competition, and was performed in concert in Auckland and Wellington.

Check out the concert below (my piece starts at 1:11:43) and read a review here.

Finally, I am putting together a retrospective concert of work composed during my time as Mozart Fellow on Nov.15 in Allen Hall Theatre… a few world premieres, some earlier stuff, lots of collaborators.. should be a fun concert. The poster by Dan Inglis is below:

And finally, a couple of weeks ago I graduated with my PhD from Waikato University. I was asked to be the student speaker, and I put together some words about creativity, collaboration, and connections… you can hear them here:

Films, Soundtracks and Brain Music

This makes for a varied update. There have been so many things going on recently.

  • Working on a bunch of new music with Chris Lam Sam
  • Writing a whole lot of music for two 48hr Film Fest teams (one in Auckland and one in Wellington – working remotely from Dunedin!)
  • Working on some new music for flute and electronics

In amongst all of this, a bunch of previous projects have gone live online.

SERVE AND PROTECT
A short film by Chasing Time Productions has finally completed its international film festival run. You can now watch that film here! Original score by The Scorelocks Collective.

LAPWING
This vintage styled superhero project has just released its trailer in time for some premiere screenings in the US. Along with the trailer release is the soundtrack! A fun, funky romp.

BRAIN MUSIC
I also recently worked on a project exploring the relationship between music and the brain with the Otago University Brain Health Research Centre. The music composed for that project is now online! Listen here:

Tropical Wetlands (Nature Documentary Soundtrack)

As part of the release of a range of projects I worked on last year here is a new album by The Scorelocks Collective. All this music was composed and performed by Chris Lam Sam and myself. It was created for a nature documentary exploring the tropical wetlands of Australia.

The music is aiming for a modernization, or contemporary film music approach to the nature documentary soundtrack – utilising a fusion of electronic and orchestral sounds in a range of stylistic approaches.

Concerts, Albums and Scores

The end of last week got kind of manic with a range of projects reaching finishing points.

– sending scores, parts, backing tracks and other performance details for the performers of a new multimedia chamber work “Flutter”.

– submitting full score and parts for a new orchestral piece “convoluted” for the NZSO SOUNZ Recordings in February next year (alas I won’t get to hear it live because I will be in Nepal)

– A fun concert at the Dunedin Public Art Gallery. Audience relaxed on beanbags, a great big reverberant space, acoustic piano drenched in electronics – All good things. Here are a few pics from the concert.

The setup for the concert.

PLUS! on the weekend we also released the Scorelocks Collective Album “A Collection of Cues – Vol.1”. It is available on bandcamp now!

Thanks everyone for your support!

Lots going on!

At this time of year things seem to always get really hectic – christmas madness, end of year functions, last minute jobs etc. and this year hasn’t been different.

I have been taking on the role of full-time stay-at-home dad while my lovely wife is helping out at her old work during the crazy season, and then she is rehearsing for Hamilton Operatics production of Hairspray (Courts is playing Tracy Turnblad). While looking after my boy I have also been trying to continue writing music (both for fun and for ‘work’ on my PhD and for other freelance jobs). It’s not always easy, but it is doable.

But some of the other things I have been working on recently include:

Playing one of the Villains in the filming of LAPWING!

Seeing the film “PLAY DEAD” on the big screen and hearing the score that the Scorelocks Collective put together.

Working on a remix for a local band… more to be revealed soon!

And as an added bonus for the week, I have just uploaded my remix for Dan Aux‘s track “The Thing”. You can also check his work out here.

So here is that remix – have a listen, download, tell your friends and enjoy the rest of the year!
