It was a busy but hugely rewarding weekend.
Two concerts.

It was excellent to work with a number of brilliant performers on these two events.

Here are some pictures of various things.

Some other information about the concerts: this article and also this interview:

There were a few pieces premiered this past weekend, and as I slowly sort through the recordings I will share some tracks… but in the meantime, here is one video that we premiered. Created by Ben Woollen, based on the track “Lingering Smoke and Watering Eyes” from the album ‘THUS’ by Days At Sea (Rob Burns, Robbie Craigie and myself).

Also, the NZTrio along with Sounz – Centre for New Zealand Music, APRA AMCOS and the Universities of NZ, have released individual videos of the performances from their Composition Competition concerts. Here is my piece:

And finally, I also managed to find time to work on a film score with John Egenes for “The Dairy Diaries” by Ashton Ledger. Here is the little theme tune:

Films, Soundtracks and Brain Music

This makes for a varied update. There have been so many things going on recently.

  • Working on a bunch of new music with Chris Lam Sam
  • Writing a whole lot of music for two 48hr Film Fest teams (one in Auckland and one in Wellington – working remotely from Dunedin!)
  • Working on some new music for flute and electronics

In amongst all of this, a bunch of previous projects have gone live online.

SERVE AND PROTECT
A short film by Chasing Time Productions has finally completed its international film festival run. You can now watch that film here! Original score by The Scorelocks Collective.

LAPWING
This vintage styled superhero project has just released its trailer in time for some premiere screenings in the US. Along with the trailer release is the soundtrack! A fun, funky romp.

BRAIN MUSIC
I also recently worked on a project exploring the relationship between music and the brain with the Otago University Brain Health Research Centre. The music composed for that project is now online! Listen here:

Country-Folk-Remix

Recently I have been working on a couple of remix projects. One for jazz-fusion band ‘Subject 2 Change’ featuring staff from the Otago Music Department. The other is a couple of tracks from the album ‘The Stone Soup Sessions‘ by John Egenes.

Drawing from the stems available on the remix site John has, I selected two tracks to remix. The first is the track ‘Little Bird’ – a lovely little folky tune featuring acoustic guitar and vocals. I took that extended it out a little, edited the vocals and replaced the acoustic guitar with a percussive accompaniment. Here is my remix version:

The other track I went for is a song called ‘Crazy Sons of Bitches’. I took this country tune and rearranged sections, removed some stuff, and added some synth bass, electronica drums and some distorted harmonica to create this kind of electro-blues version of the tune:

Free downloads of both tracks are available on Soundcloud.
